Two fifth graders from Lenihan Intermediate School of Marshalltown were named state finalists in the Letters about Literature contest through the Library of Congress.

Lucas Hagen and Anessa Morrison received the honor, two of just 36 state finalists out of 720 contestants from Iowa.

As part of the project, students wrote a letter to an author, alive or dead, about a piece of literature that changed their perspective on the world or themselves. Lucas wrote a letter to JK Rowling  and Anessa wrote a letter to Patricia Reilly Giff.
