MHS wins state Envirothon

Marshalltown High School secured its 8th state Envirothon title yesterday, winning the Iowa championship at Springbrook State Park in Guthrie Center.

MHS had two teams competing April 7: the “Marshalltown Whales 1” and “Marshalltown Whales 2”. The Whales 1 placed first in the oral event and first overall. Whales 2 placed first in the soils event. The second place team overall was Riceville FFA.

The contest consisted of four outdoor stations covering forestry, wildlife, soils, and aquatics as well as a 15-minute oral presentation on this year’s current issue: Sustainable Local Agriculture.

This is the third state Envirothon title for seniors Abby Snyder and Adam Willman (2012, 2013, 2014) and the second for senior Sean Finn (2013, 2014).

The team will now compete at the Midwestern Envirothon Championships

at Loyala University in Chicago Aug. 4-7. Due to financial issues and changes in program leadership the 2014 International Envirothon in Athens, Georgia, was cancelled.
