Marshalltown High School senior Adam Willman earned the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s “Moving the Planet Forward” award at the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa March 28 for his microbiology research.

Willman’s project, “The Use Of Bacteriophages to Purify Water,” earned honorable mention in the microbiology category in addition to the NOAA honor. In his research Willman determined the concentration of bacteriophage that is optimal to effectively kill e. coli. Then he applied this knowledge to treating bacteria that naturally occur in river water.

Willman conducted his research through the MHS Extended Learning Program.
