“When kids lose ground over the summer, it’s hard for them to make it up,” said Mick Jurgensen, principal of Rogers Elementary School in Marshalltown. “High-quality instruction during the regular school year is absolutely necessary, but for many kids, the additional opportunities to learn — rather than being idle — becomes essential.”
Jurgensen’s school uses federal funds and partners with community organizations to provide full-day summer programs for students.
