MHS Math Team second at Iowa Falls

The Marshalltown High School Math Team placed second at a contest held Saturday, Jan. 12, at Iowa Falls-Alden High School. 

MHS beat out Johnston, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Cedar Rapids Washington to place second. Iowa City West took the top spot.

The team took numerous team and individual honors throughout the contest. Ben Anzis, Aaron Schwandt and Mitchell Schwandt placed first in the relay round and first in the team round along with Nicole Lacina, Joe Metzger and James Talbert.

Anzis also placed first overall among juniors and first among juniors in the sprint and target rounds.

Lacina placed first overall among sophomores, as well as first in the target round and third in the sprint round.

The “Sprint Round” consists of 30 problems that must be completed in 60 minutes. The problems are difficult and completing just half of them is considered exceptional.

The “Target Round” is comprised of sets of two problems to be completed in 10 minutes, followed by three more sets of two problems, each to be completed in 10 minutes.
