Twelve members of the Marshalltown High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended the State Fall Leadership Conference Sept. 23-24 in Des Moines.

The conference started on Sunday afternoon with a motivational speech from the keynote speaker, Layton Zbornik. Zbornik shared the 10 keys to being a great leader that he learned during his life of being a radio DJ, an inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and as a motivational speaker. The rest of the evening was spent networking, as students had a chance to mingle over hors d’oeuvres, play games and attend a dance.

On Monday, the students attended several breakout sessions. Topics included Great Follower = Great Leader (More from Layton Zbornik); Know the difference between casual, business casual, and business professional dress; March of Dimes charity fundraiser; KPMG accounting careers; and Business Achievement Awards.

“The KPMG presentation was very informative and made a career in accounting sound interesting and fun,” said Rachel Faircloth, FBLA president.

FBLA is a career and technical student organization promoting education, service, progress, and leadership.
