Marshalltown High School placed 17th out of 54 teams at the Canon International Envirothon July 22-27, 2012, in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
The state champion team of Joe Metzger, Adam Willman, Molly Finn, Brennan Goodman and Abby Snyder placed in the top half of every competition, with their highest score being a sixth place finish in the oral competition.
Marshalltown placed 16h in aquatics, 22nd in forestry, 25th in soils, 22nd in wildlife and 18th in current issue.
“We are also proud that we placed just two places and two points behind the Pennsylvania team, which certainly had a home-state advantage,” said Susan Fritzell, MHS Extended Learning Program teacher. “The students not only learned a lot during our week in Pennsylvania, but really enjoyed getting to know students from across North America (their new best friends are from California and Tennessee) and experiencing the mountains, rivers, and waterfalls of that part of the country. “
Envirothon is a team competition testing high school students on critical thinking skills and knowledge about environmental topics.
Marshalltown advanced to state after competing in one of five regional events comprised of 52 teams across Iowa. The top 15 teams from regionals were selected to compete at state.
