The Harlem Quartet: Violinists Ilmar Gavilan and Melissa White, violist Juan Miguel Hernandez, and cellist Paul Wiancko.
The Harlem Quartet is a professional string quartet and the resident ensemble of the New England Conservatory of Music. This young, dynamic ensemble was founded in 2006 by the Sphinx organization – a national non-profit group focused on building diversity in classical music. The group has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, and the White House, among others.
Marshalltown Students will have the opportunity to hear the quartet during special assemblies throughout the day Friday. MHS orchestra and other instrumental music students will be in the MHS/Community Auditorium at 9:25am. At 11am the group will meet with the MHS Literature Over Lunch group.
In the afternoon the Harlem Quartet will hold assemblies at Lenihan Intermediate (1:30pm, Lenihan Gym) and at Miller Middle School (2:40pm, Miller Auditorium).
A public “Meet the Musicians” event will be held at the Marshalltown Public Library from 5 to 5:45pm. Members of the quartet speak both English and Spanish, and grew up in various countries around the world. The free concert will follow at St. Mary’s from 6:30 to 7:15pm.
