Woodbury Service Learners place a large bag of dog food into their cart as they shop for pet food and supplies at Theisen's. The group received a $1,000 toward their supply drive to purchase the products, with Theisen's adding an addition $300 in a gift card and in-kind donations.
Last Wednesday the Woodbury Service Learners went on a shopping spree. The budget: $1000. The goal: to support their four-legged friends living at the Animal Rescue League.
The shopping trip to Theisen’s marked the culmination of a supply drive held Feb. 29-March 4 across the district and organized by the Woodbury Service Learners. The group consists of 12 Woodbury Elementary fourth graders who meet weekly to identify and address needs in the community.
Plans for the drive began in early January. The students have used the Reach Out Iowa model throughout the school year as a way of identifying community needs and brainstorming ways to have an impact. Many of the ideas included food drives, neighborhood cleanup and recycling among others.
The group decided they wanted to support the Animal Rescue league and determined a pet food and supply drive would have the greatest impact. Students decorated collection boxes (donated by PCA) and contacted principals to have boxes located at schools. The Service Learners also counted out flyers to send home with each preschool through sixth grade student. They also posted signs at Miller Middle School.
Besides the items collected at schools, the Service Learners received a $1,000 donation from a community member to purchase pet food and supplies. On March 9 the students went shopping at Theisen’s to use the donation. Theisen’s also donated a $100 gift card to the cause and allowed the Service Learners to use the employee discount, resulting in the equivalent of a $200 in-kind donation.
In total the students were able to purchase $1,300 in pet food and supplies for the Animal Rescue League.
